Dentists are more eager than ever to retain their staff which means they are offering higher levels of compensation to their employees. Unfortunately, many institute bonus plans as a way to increase motivation and retention, while supposedly controlling costs.
But these bonus plans often backfire. This is not surprising, because research done by social scientists over the last 60 years shows that money is not a great motivator and in fact, surprisingly has a negative impact on performance. Even worse, bonus plans in a dental office can be unethical.
